How Kiln-Dried Firewood Works

The work behind a steady burn

Kiln-dried firewood is natural hardwood dried in sealed kilns under controlled heat and airflow until its moisture content falls below 18 %. This precise drying process delivers hotter, cleaner, and longer burns than air-dried or naturally seasoned wood.

We use Birch, Oak, and Ash, three hardwoods chosen for how they burn, not how they look. Birch gives quick, light, and bright flame, Oak burns slowly and steadily for lasting heat, and Ash offers balanced warmth and a clean burn.

It depends on your stove and airflow, but typically:

Birch burns for 60 minutes with a lively flame.
Oak burns for up to an hour and a half with steady heat.
Ash sits comfortably between both.

But burn time is only half the story.

Because kiln-dried logs hold less than 18 % moisture, almost all their stored energy becomes usable heat, something you simply don’t get from wet or “seasoned” wood.

Every log burns brighter, hotter, and cleaner, with no wasted energy boiling off water.

Burn time depends on the wood’s density, moisture content, airflow, and log size. Dense woods like Oak store more energy per log and burn longer.

Logs dried below 18 % moisture release more usable heat because less energy is wasted evaporating water. Good airflow and efficient stoves extend burn time further, keeping fires bright and consistent.

Yes. ECOFUEL™ kiln-dried logs are Ready to Burn certified and EPA-registered, making them safe for use in wood-burning stoves, inserts, open fires, and outdoor firepits.

Wherever you burn, they burn better.

Yes, because every log delivers more usable heat.

Seasoned wood often holds 25–40 % moisture, meaning a large part of what you’re paying for is water that must first boil away before the log burns efficiently.

Kiln-dried firewood is precision-dried below 18 % moisture, so nearly all its stored energy becomes heat.

You’ll use fewer logs, create less smoke, and keep your stove glass cleaner, or in simple terms, a smaller stack that simply goes further.

Sustainability and Impact

From living forests to cleaner fires

Our kiln-dried logs are sourced primarily from Latvia, one of Europe’s most sustainably managed forest regions.

Over half the country is forested, and every cubic metre harvested is balanced by replanting under strict EU and Latvian forestry standards. These forests are carefully thinned rather than clear-cut, ensuring biodiversity and steady regrowth.

ECOFUEL™ kiln-dried firewood is both Woodsure Ready to Burn certified (Company ID: WS5550, Certificate No: WS5550/00005) and EPA registered (Registration No: F0087-01), meeting the highest standards for clean, efficient fuel.

Wood naturally belongs to the biogenic carbon cycle. As trees grow, they absorb CO₂; when wood burns or decomposes, that same CO₂ returns to the air.

Unlike fossil fuels, this doesn’t release ancient carbon.

Because kiln-dried logs burn more efficiently, more stored energy becomes usable heat instead of smoke, making every log count.

Traditional air-drying can take years and depends entirely on the weather.

Our kilns use energy recovered from sawmill residues to bring each batch below 18% moisture, ready for use year-round.

The drying process itself is powered by recycled wood biomass, completing the cycle: waste wood fuels the preparation of cleaner fuel.

That consistency reduces waste, cuts transport inefficiency, and ensures customers always receive clean-burning, compliant fuel.

Moisture is the difference between smoke and steady heat.

With ≤18% moisture, ECOFUEL™ logs ignite faster, burn hotter, and emit significantly fewer particulates than seasoned firewood.

They’re Ready to Burn and EPA registered, meeting Ireland’s air-quality standards under the Solid Fuel Regulations.

Cleaner fires protect both your stove and the air we all share.

Ready To Burn Certified

The Ready to Burn mark is used for identifying certified firewood and kindling that have a moisture content of less than 20%. It also applies to accredited wood briquettes that have been tested to BS ISO 17255-3 standards. This verifies that the raw materials used are 100% clean, chemically untreated, or virgin wood.
